Nature has this incredible way of looking after us. You'll know by now that we're big fans of natural therapies and natural healing here at The Purist. With so many beautiful, healing herbs and nourishing whole foods out there, how could we not be? We're also big believers in nature being there to provide exactly what our bodies need - it always has been, and always will be.
Sometimes we forget this. Sometimes we get busy, or distracted, or enticed by certain aisles of the supermarket (chips, we're looking at you, mate). And nature knows what we're like. So it made it reeeeaaaaal simple for us.
Yep, prepare to have your mind blown: here's 7 foods you should be eating for whole body health that look EXACTLY LIKE OUR BODY PARTS!
1. W A L N U T S
Ever noticed how brain-like these bad boys are? Packed full of compounds to protect the brain and enhance its function, like vitamin E, melatonin, folate and antioxidants, walnuts also contain a considerable amount of your day's recommended omega 3 intake. Omega 3 works wonders for brain health, but also for mental health. Coincidence? We think not.
2. C A R R O T S
There's no doubt you've heard about the benefits of carrots for eye health. Slice a carrot crosswise, and you'll notice the similarities between this humble veg and our eye's pupil and iris. While they might not give us rabbit vision, carrots improve the health of our eyes by promoting blood flow, but also by protecting from age-related macular degeneration and cataracts thanks to their beta-carotene content.
3. T O M A T O
Not only are the colour and shape familiar - cut through the middle of a tomato, and notice its four heart-like 'chambers'. Tomatoes are high in lycopene, a heart-feeding antioxidant known to reduce the risk of developing heart disease.
4. G I N G E R
Ginger and digestive health go hand in hand. Ever felt a little icky, or had an unhappy tummy, and reached for the ginger? Ginger root bares an incredible resemblance to the shape of the stomach, with thousands of years of traditional use AND science back its ability to reduce nausea and ease digestion.
5. C E L E R Y
Celery and bones look awful similar. They also contain the exact same amount of sodium - 23%. When our bodies are low in sodium, they rob our bones for more, so chewing on some celery can help to keep both our bodies and bones healthy. Celery is also rich in silicone, which is another nutrient vital for building strong, healthy bones.
6. G R A P E F R U I T
Grapefruit and other citrus fruits bare (pun intended) some striking similarity to the mammary glands of the breasts. And, coincidentally, consuming these fruits helps to promote the movement of lymph in and out of the mammary glands. The limonoids in grapefruit have also been found to inhibit breast cancer development in both animal and human studies.
7. S W E E T P O T A T O
The pancreas is the powerhouse responsible for insulin production, helping to control blood sugar levels (in cases of diabetes, its function is disordered). The pancreas also looks basically identical to a sweet potato! Funnily enough, sweet potato is a low GI (glycaemic index) food - a carbohydrate with a low, or beneficial, impact on our blood glucose levels, making it perfect for weight management, skin clearing, and all-over health. Sweet potato is also rich in antioxidant beta-carotene, and so works to protect the pancreas...and the rest of our bodies.
Have you noticed any other uncanny resemblances when eating? Kidney beans? Grapes? Red wine?
